Celia & The Mutations
Was Celia Gollin but her career was more famous for the fact that her backing band on her first single Money Money/Mean To Me (United Artists 1977) – The Mutations – were The Stranglers. The connection didn’t stop there because she was discovered by their manager Dai Davies in a Chelsea restaurant.
“She was ‘mixing Marlene Dietrich songs with Kinks and Velvet Underground songs. She was so polite and English that I thought it would be really great to see her singing in front of a nasty dirty rock band like The Stranglers. The contrast would be incredible.”
Caroline Coon in the Melody Maker July 1977 opined ‘Celia is set to stick at the top…Huge hit potential.’ Unfortunately neither this nor the follow up single You Better Believe Me/Round And Around (1977), this time the ‘fabulous mutations’ featuring just Jean Jacques Burnel and Wilko Johnson this time, got anywhere. To be fair it wasn’t hard to guess the identity of her backing band given the back of her first single but it gave an angle to work the press.
To be fair Celia & The Mutations aka Celia didn’t play the record company game and was never interviewed and we assume happily remained as she was. Missing in action.
