Skin Flicks

Denise Dufort tells the story of Skin Flicks: “The band was formed in 1976 in London by Jeff Swartz who later changed his name to Black and then Death. He wanted to front an all female punk band and advertised in the music papers. I answered his ad and passed the audition. We all agreed on the name Skin Flicks because it means porn films and we thought it would sound funny.
The members of the band were, Sue Tinline formally of Foxy Lady and one of the best female guitarists we had ever seen on (Lead Guitar), Suzi Webb (Bass) formally of the punk band The Slits and me on drums with Jeff singing.
Songs in the set include Life’s a Drag, She’s So Fat, Mental Case Hiroshima and Dead Dad. A review by Giovanni Dadomo (Sounds 16.7.77) of their gig at The Lord Nelson describes them as.
“…a long way from greatness, but somehow here and now they fulfil their function as entertainment. Tunewise there’s no immediate gems apparent and the words are mainly inaudible. Jeff Death, try as he will to be menacing, comes over as a sweet mixture of Harry H. Corbett and Norman Wisdom”

We just wanted to play music and Jeff thought we should try being a punk band. None of us really liked punk so we tried to play punk type music but really we were more into Rock. I did dye my hair pink though! Hee hee! We played at the Roxy supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees, Raped, and a lot of other bands that I can’t remember, then we played the Roxy Club with The Killjoys supporting us.
We did record a record for Dave Goodman’s The Label but I cant remember what it was called and it didn’t do a lot. In mid 1977 we decided to change the name to Flicks. In the end we sacked Jeff and became a 3 piece called the Furry Freak Sisters. Then we were asked if we would like to join a satirical rock band called the Sadista Sisters which me and the two Sue’s did.”

Later Denise joined Painted Lady who became Girlschool (she’s third from the left in the picture opposite) and who she continues to play for. Ironically in Girlschool she would meet up again with Gil Weston, the bassist from The Killjoys who’s second from the left next to her!
