The Mekons

The Mekons were a Leeds band of idealistic purists who hoped to represent all the positive aspects of punk while avoiding the rock star rot that afflicted the earlier bands. They avoided doing interviews, using their real names or having their photos taken and rarely played any gigs other than against fascism, racism and sexism.*
Two great singles very much in the DIY sound of say the Buzzcocks Spiral Scratch. Again the Mekons swerved the 1234 of traditional punk taking a different dissonant approach. Never Been In A Riot / 32 Weeks / Heart And Soul (1978 Fast Products) and the great Where Were You / I’ll Have To Dance Then (On My Own ) (1978 Fast Products).
