The Prats were an Edinburgh band who all lived in a high-rise flat in the Oxgangs area of town. Formed in late 1977 at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Comprehensive, the band comprised the Maguire brothers – Dave (drums) and Greg (guitar and singing) Maguire, along with their bigger brother Jeff, who was the group’s manager and later bass player. The band also included Paul McLaughlin and Tom Robinson. Notable for their ages with the youngest 12 years old and the oldest 15 years old.

The band claimed The Slits and Mekons as influences. Inevitable immaturity in playing and lyrics and certainly no Eater style band. Released three tracks on Fast Records 12″ Earcom in 1979  – Inverness (“Inverness, what a mess!”), Bored and Prats 2

This was picked up by DJ John Peel and they were given a session and an offer from him to donate an appearance fee to fund a single. Other songs in their set from the time  –  a scarcely recognisable cover of Jilted John and Nazi Aircraft. Stumbled on till as late as 1981 when they finished school but got back togther in later years.

The band claimed The Slits and Mekons as influences. Inevitable immaturity in playing and lyrics and a surprise bouns came in later years when their their track “General Davis” was featured in the opening credits of Jonathan Demme’s 2004 film, The Manchurian Candidate.

Their Eracom contributions were certainly not easy listening but are good but polarised as one Youtube comment shows on their track ‘Inverness.’

I got a freebie promo of this in 79 when I managed a record store…1 minute 50 secs of torture. It was frisbied out the back of shop
